This article explores the ideas of exile, communication, and trauma in the character of Calvert Casey, who developed speech failures as a result of deep scars and symptoms that were generated during his exile to the United States.

Ofelia is pursuing her MA in Latin American literature at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include Chicano and Latin American literature, theory of translation, borderlands, creative writing, and more.
